How to Wash Reusable Diapers

How to Wash Reusable Diapers

Maximum washing temperature for PUL and absorbent inserts: 60 °C. Spin at up to 800 rpm.

  1. Get a diaper pail (a simple airtight container will also work) and place it near the toilet.

  2. If the diaper is only wet, you can put it directly in the pail.

  3. If your child has had a bowel movement, empty the contents of the diaper into the toilet. You can use a special spoon for this (used exclusively for this purpose!). If the diaper is heavily soiled, it should be rinsed first with cold water — warm water sets stains.
A slightly unusual but very effective solution is a so-called diaper sprayer, which is installed behind the toilet. It works like a small shower and takes care of the “messy work” for you.

  4. Make sure you have enough diapers so you can wash them daily or every other day. This prevents unpleasant odors and inhibits bacterial growth.

  5. Wash the diapers in the washing machine.
Before the main wash cycle, it is recommended to run a rinse or short wash cycle with cold water without detergent. Alternatively, you can rinse the absorbent inserts by hand immediately after use.

Why is pre-rinsing so important? Without this step, the diapers will be washed along with whatever is still in them. ;)

If the absorbent inserts start to smell over time, it is usually due to using the wrong detergent or skipping pre-rinsing.

If this happens, we recommend our tips for “stripping,” i.e., a thorough deep cleaning.

But we think prevention is better than aftercare — so always pre-rinse!

Do not overfill the drum — the diapers need space, especially since some materials are waterproof.

Wash the diapers at 60 °C or at 40 °C with a diaper disinfectant (e.g., Nappy Fresh).

You can use any detergent in the recommended dosage, but:

  • X No fabric softener (e.g., Lenor) — it clogs the fibers of the inserts and reduces absorbency.

  • X No soap flakes or detergents with more than 5 % soap content.

  • + Powder detergent is better than liquid detergent, as liquids often contain too much soap.

Depending on water hardness, it may make sense to try different detergents. Make sure the detergent does not irritate your child’s sensitive skin.

Recommended spin speed: max. 800 rpm, to protect the PUL layer.

  1. Reusable diapers dry best outside in the sun — this also bleaches the fabric.
If that’s not possible, you can also hang them inside on a line.

Absorbent inserts may be dried on a radiator.

Our diapers can also be dried in a tumble dryer at the lowest temperature.
